Slant Board Angles Explained: Which Incline Should You Use?

Wooden slant board shown at 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 degree angles

Most slant boards adjust somewhere between 15° and 45°. The angle decides how far your ankles bend, so it controls how strong the stretch feels. Here's how to choose the right one.

How the angle changes the stretch

The steeper the board, the more your toes point up compared with your heels, and the stronger the stretch through your calves and Achilles. Lower angles are gentler and better for longer holds and warm-ups. Higher angles give a deeper stretch once your calves are already flexible.

A simple guide to angles

  • Low (about 15°–25°): gentle stretching, beginners, warm-ups and heel-elevated squats.
  • Medium (about 30°–35°): a firmer everyday calf stretch once the low setting feels easy.
  • High (about 40°–45°): a deep stretch for people who already have good ankle mobility.

Which angle should you start with?

Start at the lowest setting on your board. On the Pick Patch House board, that's 25°. If it feels like too much at first, hold for less time, keep your knees soft, or rest a hand on a wall. Move up one setting only when the current one feels easy for a full 60-second hold.

How to progress

  1. Hold for 30 seconds at your starting angle.
  2. Build up to 60 seconds over a week or two.
  3. Move up one angle and drop back to 30-second holds.
  4. Repeat the cycle.

Why an adjustable board helps

A fixed-angle wedge gives you only one level of stretch. An adjustable board lets you start gentle and keep progressing as you loosen up. It also lets everyone in your home use the angle that suits them.

Our board's settings

The Pick Patch House slant board adjusts to 25°, 30°, 35°, 40° and 45°. That's steeper at the top end than many slant boards, which often stop around 35°, so you have room to keep progressing.
